چکیده

In this paper, we address the general case of a coordinated secondary network willing to exploit communication opportunities left vacant by a licensed primary network. Since secondary users (SU) usually have no prior knowledge on the environment, they need to learn the availability of each channel through sensing techniques, which however can be prone to detection errors. We argue that cooperation among secondary users can enable efficient learning and coordination mechanisms in order to maximize the spectrum exploitation by SUs, while minimizing the impact on the primary network. To this goal, we provide three novel contributions. First, we formulate the spectrum allocation problem through a general learning model that takes into account the observation limits of the SUs. Second, we derive fundamental limits on the optimality of the Upper Confidence Bound algorithm, in case secondary users can share the rewards and have symmetric goals and communication capabilities. Third, we introduce a general coordination mechanism under uncertainty based on the Hungarian algorithm and we show, through several simulations, that it converges to the optimal channels that maximize the secondary network overall performance without prior knowledge on its nature (symmetric or not).

Design of an Efficient MAC Protocol for Opportunistic Cognitive Radio Networks

Cognitive radio technology has been developed in recent years to make efficient use of the wireless spectrum especially for opportunistic spectrum access. Cognitive radio technology enables the secondary (cognitive) users to use the unused licensed spectrum of the primary users. Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol plays a vital role in spectrum utilization, primary user’s (PU) interference man...

Distributed Opportunistic Channel Acquisition Mechanism in Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks

We present a distributed opportunistic channel acquisition mechanism in dynamic spectrum access (DSA) networks. A novel graph-multicoloring algorithm is proposed for secondary networks, in which, each network makes use only of the local topology information (i.e., information about itself and its one-hop neighbors) to resolve contentions during channel access. We show that the proposed algorith...

The Role of Regulatory in Price Control and Spectrum Allocation to Competing Wireless Access Networks

With the rapid growth of wireless access networks, various providers offer their services using different technologies such as Wi-Fi, Wimax, 3G, 4G and so on. These networks compete for the scarce wireless spectrum. The spectrum is considered to be a scarce resource moderated by the spectrum allocation regulatory (“regulatory” for short) which is the governance body aiming to maximize the socia...

Opportunistic Spectrum Access in Fading Channels Through Collaborative Sensing

Spectrum scarcity is becoming a major issue for service providers interested in either deploying new services or enhancing the capacity for existing applications. On the other hand, recent measurements suggest that many portions of the licensed (primary) spectrum remain unused for significant periods of time. This has led the regulatory bodies to consider opening up under-utilized licensed freq...
